Im/Migrant Rights

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian (communities of West Asian, South Asian, Southeast Asian, and East Asian descent) and all im/migrant community members can live safely and thrive regardless of their citizenship or migration status.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Provide equity and justice for those who’ve been marginalized because of their status by providing a burdenless pathway to citizenship for all 11+ million undocumented and 350,000+ Temporary Protective Status residents in the U.S. or providing the aforementioned communities equitable rights and benefits that mirror citizenship status.
  • Move away from punitive measures by ending all private and public immigration detention center contracts with local, state, and federal governments, ending all contracts and agreements between local and state governments with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and eventually abolishing the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
  • Re-center humanity by decriminalizing migration into the U.S., decriminalizing activities made by im/migrants, and breaking the intersection between the criminal legal and immigration systems (“crimmigration”) that emboldens detention and deportations.
  • Reflect our diversity by investing in language and culturally just programs and initiatives that hire multilingual staff, disaggregate data collection, analysis, and reporting of our communities by race, ethnicity, gender identity, and sexual orientation, and holistically funds local organizations to fill in language gaps at the local and state level.
  • Reduce barriers by eliminating or scaling back citizenship or immigration status related restrictions and bars to local, state, or federal public services and benefits, including access to a driver’s license, public affordable housing, and direct cash assistance.

Health Equity

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian and all im/migrant community members can live a healthy and fulfilling life with their community.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Reduce barriers to health care by expanding Medicaid in Texas under the Affordable Care Act, expanding eligibility to Medicaid for those regardless of im/migration status and seniors left behind by Medicare, and eventually adopting a robust, equitable, and publicly funded universal health care system.
  • Preserve, expand, and codify reproductive rights, including and especially abortion rights.
  • Meet our needs by hiring multilingual and culturally competent community health workers at city and county health departments.
  • Properly study and address health disparities in our communities by creating an Office for Health Equity at the state level to coordinate and execute recommended and community-based interventions with city and county health departments.
  • Invest in our communities by creating and positioning critical resources in food accessibility, health clinics, and mental health professionals closer to our neighborhoods.

Climate & Environmental Justice

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian and all im/migrant community members can drink clean water, breathe clean air, and live sustainably and respectively in and with our shared environment.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Reduce allowable carbon emission levels from industries and companies while empowering regulators (Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) to levy punishment on groups that exceed those levels.
  • Restricts the building or permitting of industries with documented trends of producing toxic pollutants near residential neighborhoods.
  • Invest in communities to build climate resiliency that is language just, culturally competent, and accessible regardless of im/migration status.
  • Reduce reliance on fossil fuels as energy sources and increase the use of renewable energy sources in solar and wind.

Education Justice

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian and all im/migrant community members can receive an inclusive, truthful, and accessible education regardless of income.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Include a K-12 social studies curriculum that properly reflects, uplifts, and shares our Asian, Pacific Islander communities.
  • Ensure tax-payer dollars go towards public schools and not private or charter schools.

Labor Rights

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian and all im/migrant community members can achieve economic prosperity without compromising on working conditions, wages, benefits, or rights.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Reduce barriers to employment based on im/migration status or criminal records.
  • Restore humanity by increasing minimum wages to match productivity growth and inflation.
  • Create programs that aid individuals (veterans, those released from their sentencing) with economic security, including re-entering the job market.
  • Reduce barriers and restrictions for work-place unionizing and limit anti-union employer tactics.

Public & Community Safety

Woori Juntos is fighting for a Texas where our Asian and all im/migrant community members can live their life without fear that an action perpetuated by lack of resources could end up being a death sentence.

We are actively pushing for policies that:

  • Reduce the accessibility to firearms including banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines, increasing the age of purchasing a firearm to 21, repealing permitless carry, and creating a gun buyback program.
  • Invest in our communities by shifting local, state, and federal funding away from law enforcement and punitive measures and towards needed services and departments in public health, libraries, schools, parks, housing, public transit, and economic opportunity.
  • Reduce punishment by decriminalizing actions and offenses through reducing the number and severity of charges and convictions and length of sentences; and ending pre-trial detention.
  • Curb and end dangerous tactics, equipment, and technology deployed by law enforcement in the form of no-knock warrants, surveillance, and military equipment and weapons.
  • Address structural and social determinants of health that create conditions for offenses by ensuring our communities have a livable and thrivable wage, an affordable and accessible home, a safe and tree-filled neighborhood to live in, and reliable public transit.
  • Move us towards transformative and restorative justice through an abolitionist framework.
